SUMMARY:Santa Pod Raceway with Robin Jackson
DESCRIPTION:Robin Jackson takes us into the world of Drag racing\, the fastest and loudest category of motorsport. It emerged from the ‘hot rod’ craze which swept post-Second World War America. The sport arrived in Britain in the early 1960s. This year marks the 60th anniversary of the 1964 British International Drag Festival\, when sportscar manufacturer and entrepreneur Sydney Allard brought over a group of leading American drag racers to compete at airfield sites across England.  \nSanta Pod Raceway opened for business two years later on the Bedfordshire-Northamptonshire border as Europe’s first permanent dragstrip and will celebrate its 60th anniversary in 2026. \nSome 400\,000 people a year pass through Santa Pod’s gates to attend more than 60 events\, public and private\, on-track and off. The opening and closing FIA European Championship rounds headline a drag racing programme which includes national championship rounds and historic events.

SUMMARY:ROBS LAMPLOUGH AVIATOR & RACING DRIVER
DESCRIPTION:A life fuelled by Aviation and Motor Sport \nOur speaker this month is former Aviator and racing driver Robs Lamplough. \nThe combined skills of Pilot and Racing Driver have over decades featured in the top level of Motorsport\, however Robs became a pioneer in the international search and restoration of both historic racing cars and airworthy military aircraft. \nA host of significant historic aeroplanes and racing cars owe their survival to him\, at a time when only a few skilled experts existed prior to the many today. \nHis passion for aviation and motorsport were clearly inherited from his Grandfather who was a physicist at the Royal Aircraft Establishment at Farnborough during both world wars. His father a WW11 Squadron Leader serving in Africa. \nUnsurprisingly he joined the RAF and learnt to fly in a Provost at Cranwell. Tragically his father was killed in a flying accident during his course and he left the service. \nIn 1962 Robs bought a Mini Cooper modified by renown tuner Don Moore\, entered into a number of races competing against a well known member of BMRC\, whose identity will be revealed at the meeting! \nHe quickly developed to become a professional international racing driver. Within just two years his first pro race was at the 1964 Canadian Grand Prix at Mosport Park\, in a Brabham BT8\, shown here at Laguna later that year.\n \nIn the following years he competed in an incredible long list of single seaters and sports cars\, both in period and historic cars.\nA common addiction is his enthusiasm for BRM’s\, he still owns a P25 and P48 shown here competing in France at Angouléme .\n \nRobs will also reveal his memorable meeting with Louis Stanley in Bourne to acquire three former team cars. This proved to be a catalyst for owning\, competing and dealing in historic racecars. Many can be viewed in a rolling presentation on the night prior to Robs’ talk. \nAmongst them is the ex Jim Clark Lotus 33 which took him to his second World Championship in 1965.\n \nA former North American Racing Team (NART) Ferrari 275LM found languishing in Ecuador fitted with a NSU Wankel Engine! Eventually its original engine was located as part of a total renovation and sold by the new owner for a world record sum.\n \nRobs rekindled his passion for aviation\, when together with his brother in law he purchased an ex RAF WW11 Harvard advanced trainer. \nIn the mid 1970’s following a tip off from a friend he travelled to Israel in search of two abandoned WW11 Hawker Hurricanes in a scrap yard in Tel Aviv. The dealer was located in a street translated from Hebrew as “The street of a thousand bent car dealers” Sure enough there they were\, purchased and bought back to Duxford for restoration. \nEventually the search widened and Spitfires and P51 Mustang’s found derelict in a Kibbutz\, given as a gift for the children to play in! They were acquired together with a host of spares and form the basis for many Warbirds now flying today. \nHis prowess as a pilot featured not only in air shows but were in demand in the film industry\, he flew his aircraft in Memphis Belle\, Pearl Harbour and Dark Blue World. Robs has so many stories to tell it at has been an impossible task selecting those to focus on for the evening but I am certain it will be a highly entertaining and informative evening\, not to be missed!!

SUMMARY:BRM Heritage Evening Celebrating The Life of Richard ‘Dick’ Salmon
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating The Life of Richard ‘Dick’ Salmon (1925-2025) \nFormer BRM Formula 1 Mechanic. \nBorn in Irnham\, the son of the village postmaster and his wife\, who ran the village shop\, Dick grew up with a fascination for things mechanical and left school at 14 to work in local garages. \nKeen to serve his country\, he joined the Home Guard at age 16 and received his army call-up in 1944. Service in various parts of the Middle East broadened his mind considerably\, and like many others of his generation\, he wasn’t too keen on the prospect of an ordinary office or factory job following his ‘demob’ in 1947. \nInitially\, Dick returned to working in a local garage\, but in 1950\, a friend’s tip-off about an opportunity at BRM\, led to his being one of the first people employed by Raymond Mays. \nDick immediately showed great initiative and was soon promoted to a Mechanic’s role in the Racing Team. There followed 15 years of travelling the world\, working with and for many of the greatest drivers of the era. The pinnacle of Dick’s career was undoubtedly serving as Graham Hill’s mechanic in 1962\, the year of BRM’s World Championship triumph. \nWith family responsibilities pressing\, Dick stepped back from the Formula 1 team in 1965 and later took up the offer of a job with Lotus\, testing production cars. By the early 80’s\, Dick had become a partner in a successful car restoration business\, based in Billingborough. \nFinally\, at the stage in his life where pipe and slippers would beckon most men\, Dick turned his ever-active mind to writing; producing two excellent books\, relating the intertwined stories of his own life and the rise and fall of BRM.

SUMMARY:Italian Evening
DESCRIPTION:We will be showing the acclaimed documentary “Vincenzo Lancia and the Birth of Modern Motoring”. \n  \nWe also plan to have a display of Italian cars in the car park. More details and how to book your entry to follow. \n  \nThis meeting will be a ticketed event with free admission for BMRC members and £10 for guests. \n \n Lancia typified the spirit of the age. At the turn of the 20th century\, the motor car fired the imagination like few other inventions. \nHe was 18\, son of an entrepreneur\, and living in Turin\, a buzzing city reinventing itself as a capital of industry. \nIn the right place at the right time\, he seized his opportunity\, first as a test driver for the nascent Fiat and then as their daredevil racing driver\, helming mighty machines to the delight of crowds on both sides of the Atlantic. \n was a young man with grand designs and in 1906\, the famous racer established his own motor company. Not to build racing cars\, but to make cars of a certain quality and drivability uncommon at the time. \nWith his small team of talented engineers\, against a backdrop of world war and political upheaval\, Lancia embraced unorthodox thinking\, listened to his customers and contemplated the ‘total’ car.\n \nWithin just 16 years\, his quiet revolution was complete\, with the creation of the Lancia Lambda\, a vehicle so innovative and advanced\, it set the agenda for the modern motor car. \nA feat he achieved again 15 years later\, with the Aprilia\, a year before his premature death. \nToday Lancia is celebrated worldwide as one of the great Italian marques and for its legendary rally conquests over the last 25 years of the previous millennium. \nHowever\, few remember its founding father and how he paved the road to the future.

SUMMARY:Ian Titchmarsh and Peter McFadyen
DESCRIPTION:For our November meeting\, we look forward to an illustrated talk from the formidable double-act of Ian Titchmarsh and Peter McFadyen. \nIan commentated on his first race in the mid-70’s and was a journalist and motorsports fan for many years before that. Having been principal commentator at Silverstone from 1983 to 2015 and covered races at virtually every other UK circuit\, he’s a familiar and knowledgeable voice to anyone who has attended race meetings during the last half-century. In his other endeavours\, he’s been part of the Radio Le Mans team\, a Director of the BRDC and Lead Judge in the Racing category at the 2024 RAC Historic Awards. \nPeter has been photographing motorsport since the 1960’s and his work has appeared in many books\, including the leading motorsports annual ‘Autocourse.’ For many years\, he contributed pictures and race reports from Oulton Park\, Aintree\, Donington and other UK circuits; to ‘Autosport’ and ‘Motorsport (formerly Motoring) News.’ He has published two books on racing at Oulton Park and has raced his Lotus Elan in the Classic Sports Car Club’s ‘Swinging Sixties’ series. He remains an active member of the Lotus Drivers Club.

SUMMARY:Les Thacker and Paul Tarsey
DESCRIPTION:The speakers this evening will be Les Thacker from BP Fuels Motorsport and Paul Tarsey\, Le Mans commentator. \n  \nNote This meeting is a week earlier than usual. \nLes Thacker \nOn leaving the army in 1963\, Les was recruited by Shell-Mex & BP and began a career in the oil industry; initially in the Sales & Marketing Division and later reinstating BP to the motorsports scene. As BP’s Motorsports Manager\, he helped establish the careers of Derek Warwick\, Martin Brundle\, Johnny Dumfries and others. \nThroughout his career\, Les remained a camera-carrying enthusiast at heart. The privileged access\, afforded by his position\, gave him marvellous opportunities to amass a huge motorsports photography archive. A selection of these images\, with commentary by Paul Tarsey\, will form the basis of our entertainment on Thursday 4th December. \nPaul Tarsey \nComing from a family with strong motorsports connections\, it was inevitable that Paul would become involved in the sport. Realising that he didn’t quite have the talent of his boyhood hero\, Stirling Moss\, a career behind the microphone beckoned. \nPaul’s first event\, as commentator\, was the 1984 Willhire 24hr race at Snetterton. He progressed from this to specialising in 24hr events\, including Le Mans\, Daytona and Paul Ricard. \nIn addition to his commentary work\, Paul founded and runs the Historic Racing News website.

SUMMARY:Peking to Paris in a 1910 White steam car - Chris Rolph
DESCRIPTION:In 2019 Chris Rolph and Mitch Gross drove a 1910 40hp White Model MM steam car from Beijing to Paris as part of the reenactment of the original event won by an Itala in 1907. \nkW\nThey drove for 5 weeks\, over 8000 miles through 12 countries and 7 time zones. They had the engine out three times and the boiler once and overcome a myriad of problems and obstacles along the way. This is the story of their epic journey. \n \n\nMore people have walked on the moon than have undertaken this odyssey. \n
