His father a WW11 Squadron Leader serving in Africa. \nUnsurprisingly he joined the RAF and learnt to fly in a Provost at Cranwell. Tragically his father was killed in a flying accident during his course and he left the service. \nIn 1962 Robs bought a Mini Cooper modified by renown tuner Don Moore\, entered into a number of races competing against a well known member of BMRC\, whose identity will be revealed at the meeting! \nHe quickly developed to become a professional international racing driver. Within just two years his first pro race was at the 1964 Canadian Grand Prix at Mosport Park\, in a Brabham BT8\, shown here at Laguna later that year.\n \nIn the following years he competed in an incredible long list of single seaters and sports cars\, both in period and historic cars.\nA common addiction is his enthusiasm for BRM’s\, he still owns a P25 and P48 shown here competing in France at Angouléme .\n \nRobs will also reveal his memorable meeting with Louis Stanley in Bourne to acquire three former team cars. This proved to be a catalyst for owning\, competing and dealing in historic racecars. Many can be viewed in a rolling presentation on the night prior to Robs’ talk. \nAmongst them is the ex Jim Clark Lotus 33 which took him to his second World Championship in 1965.\n \nA former North American Racing Team (NART) Ferrari 275LM found languishing in Ecuador fitted with a NSU Wankel Engine! Eventually its original engine was located as part of a total renovation and sold by the new owner for a world record sum.\n \nRobs rekindled his passion for aviation\, when together with his brother in law he purchased an ex RAF WW11 Harvard advanced trainer. \nIn the mid 1970’s following a tip off from a friend he travelled to Israel in search of two abandoned WW11 Hawker Hurricanes in a scrap yard in Tel Aviv. The dealer was located in a street translated from Hebrew as “The street of a thousand bent car dealers” Sure enough there they were\, purchased and bought back to Duxford for restoration. \nEventually the search widened and Spitfires and P51 Mustang’s found derelict in a Kibbutz\, given as a gift for the children to play in! They were acquired together with a host of spares and form the basis for many Warbirds now flying today. \nHis prowess as a pilot featured not only in air shows but were in demand in the film industry\, he flew his aircraft in Memphis Belle\, Pearl Harbour and Dark Blue World. Robs has so many stories to tell it at has been an impossible task selecting those to focus on for the evening but I am certain it will be a highly entertaining and informative evening\, not to be missed!! He soon progressed through to rallying with a wide variety of competitive cars right up to present day. \nIn 1988 he decided to go into historic motor sport\, built the Riley Blue Streak Special\, one of the most successful cars in the VSCC (Vintage Sports Car Club). It still holds records on some of the UK Hill Climbs for Pre-War Sports Cars and remains in his ownership. \nJulian and his great friend Mac Hulbert\, became joint custodians of the famous ex Raymond Mays ERA R4D and also jointly owned the HWM Jaguar VPA9. \nHis talk will explore his exploits in BRDC Sports Car Class events and at the Monaco Historic Grand Prix\, winning four times receiving the honour of life time membership of the prestigious Automobile Club de Monaco. \nJulian has also been a regular entrant at Goodwood Revival campaigning his beloved 1960 Scarab-Offenhauser F1 with three wins to his credit. \nA career highpoint was being asked to drive a 1958 Ferrari Testarossa at the Sanoma Raceway in California. \nSo we can look forward to another highly entertaining night at the Corn Exchange\, don’t miss it. Service in various parts of the Middle East broadened his mind considerably\, and like many others of his generation\, he wasn’t too keen on the prospect of an ordinary office or factory job following his ‘demob’ in 1947. \nInitially\, Dick returned to working in a local garage\, but in 1950\, a friend’s tip-off about an opportunity at BRM\, led to his being one of the first people employed by Raymond Mays. \nDick immediately showed great initiative and was soon promoted to a Mechanic’s role in the Racing Team. There followed 15 years of travelling the world\, working with and for many of the greatest drivers of the era. The pinnacle of Dick’s career was undoubtedly serving as Graham Hill’s mechanic in 1962\, the year of BRM’s World Championship triumph. \nWith family responsibilities pressing\, Dick stepped back from the Formula 1 team in 1965 and later took up the offer of a job with Lotus\, testing production cars. By the early 80’s\, Dick had become a partner in a successful car restoration business\, based in Billingborough. \nFinally\, at the stage in his life where pipe and slippers would beckon most men\, Dick turned his ever-active mind to writing; producing two excellent books\, relating the intertwined stories of his own life and the rise and fall of BRM. Having been principal commentator at Silverstone from 1983 to 2015 and covered races at virtually every other UK circuit\, he’s a familiar and knowledgeable voice to anyone who has attended race meetings during the last half-century. As BP’s Motorsports Manager\, he helped establish the careers of Derek Warwick\, Martin Brundle\, Johnny Dumfries and others. \nThroughout his career\, Les remained a camera-carrying enthusiast at heart. The privileged access\, afforded by his position\, gave him marvellous opportunities to amass a huge motorsports photography archive. A selection of these images\, with commentary by Paul Tarsey\, will form the basis of our entertainment on Thursday 4th December. \nPaul Tarsey \nComing from a family with strong motorsports connections\, it was inevitable that Paul would become involved in the sport. They will be talking about the history of the line\, and some of the events that have happened there. \n \nAfter 37 years as an accountant / Finance Director\, David spent 6 years as a Tourist Officer in Oundle Tourist Information Centre before retiring completely to concentrate on his volunteering roles with Duxford Aviation Society\, Oxfam and Nene Valley Railway. His main focus now is NVR where he is part of the Museum and Archive Group\, the Education team and two project working parties\, the Overton Goods Yard project and Wansford Old Station Building project. \nHe has a lifelong interest in all forms of transport and is a member of National Transport Trust\, North Norfolk Railway and Australian Motor Heritage Foundation. \n  \nFollowing a career of 44 years as a Civil Servant\, Keith retired in 2019. Although volunteering for the NVR in the Museum and Archive Group 3 years earlier\, he became the Honorary Museum Curator in 2021. In 2024 Keith started additional service at the NVR in the Education Team as the team leader was due to step down. Keith then became Leader in late 2024. Further developments at NVR include Peterborough City Centre historical walks centering on Peterborough North station and the old Spital Shed\, Crescent Bridge\, Sheet stores near Asda\, Railworld and old LNWR shed and finally the old Peterborough East site and associated buildings at Fletton Quays.
