The Celica raced for three years in the BSCC in the hands of Wilds (1978)\, Alec Poole (1979) and future Formula 1 star and Le Mans winner Martin Brundle (1980). It remains in highly original condition\, even down to the hand-painted HOB livery. \nIt will be joined by the recently restored Escort RS1600 that was formerly owned by Ford but built and run by Broadspeed in 1971 for John Fitzpatrick. SUMMARY:EUROPEAN FINALS – FIA/FIM European Drag Racing Championships
DESCRIPTION:300mph Women Drivers Headline FIA/FIM European Finals \nIda Zetterström\, Susanne Callin\, Jndia Erbacher – three women with one thing in common: they are Europe’s fastest-ever racing drivers. \n \n\nThe trio all drive 10\,000-horsepower Top Fuel Dragsters. Finland’s Zetterström holds the European speed record at 321.01mph. Sweden’s Callin is a shade slower at 320.20mph. Switzerland’s Erbacher held the previous record at 318.96mph before the other two topped it at Santa Pod in May. \nNow all three return to Santa Pod in a season-ending shootout to settle who will be 2023’s FIA Top Fuel champion. The European Finals will see more than two dozen overseas entrants take on Britain’s finest dragstrip practitioners across a range of two- and four-wheeled European championship title-chases supported by an array of UK national classes. \nFree entry to the pits allows a close-up view of all the team mechanics in action. With more than 250 entries\, there’s no shortage of activity to see. \nIn Top Fuel\, Malta’s ex-champ Duncan Micallef and Denmark’s Stig Neergaard will battle to uphold male honour in pursuit of their own race-winning ambitions. Gender is irrelevant in drag racing. While circuit racing still struggles to integrate female drivers in a male-dominated scene\, women have been taking the fight to men in the straight-line sport for decades. The Zetterström-Callin contest for this year’s FIA crown is just the latest example of female empowerment on the top rung of the sport. Erbacher\, Micallef and Neergaard are no longer title contenders but are no less bent on adding another prestigious race win to their tallies and disrupting Zetterström’s and Callin’s showdown for the crown in the process. \nAlmost as fast and just as loud as the Top Fuel Dragsters\, five ground-pounding nitro Funny Cars provide a Swedish opponent\, Patrik Pers\, for Britain’s high-octane\, high-decibel quartet\, Kevin Kent\, Steve Ashdown\, Kevin Chapman and Jason Phelps. Kent returns to the track after a race-winning\, record-setting performance (4.187sec/291.25mph) in July. \nFifteen overseas entrants will make the trip to battle Britain’s finest Pro Modified racers in a double-header contest combining rounds of the FIA European and Motorsport UK British championships. Sweden\, Switzerland\, the Netherlands\, Germany\, France and Estonia are all represented. Two Swedish racers share little mutual affection: veteran Michael Gullqvist has dominated the scene for so long with seven FIA Pro Mod championships under his belt but finds his rule usurped by Jan Ericsson\, a comparative newcomer to the class who has scooped the last two championships in a row and leads again this season. Among their compatriots\, fan-favourite Fredrik Fagerström brings his unique – indeed eccentric – Chevy truck\, a blunderbuss amid a field of rotary cannons. ‘Fast Freddy’ delights the crowds with half-track burnouts and blistering reverses while his 5.9-second\, 240mph capability can upset any storied opponent. \nOn Pro Mod’s home front\, Bobby Wallace has been running away all season with the Motorsport UK British championship. Wallace has reached Santa Pod’s last six Pro Mod final rounds\, winning four. His only defeats have come in previous combined rounds at the hands of Jan Ericsson. Can Wallace now go one better and take victory ahead of the dominant Swede\, or will the British champion-elect’s stellar progress be interrupted early on? With 22 entrants to be squeezed into Sunday’s 16-car eliminations field\, qualifying will alone be worth the price of admission. \nOverseas entries also compete in the Pro Stock and Top Methanol classes. Top Methanol features Dragsters and Funnies racing together. Supporting them all is a full programme of Sportsman competition. \nOn two wheels\, FIM-Europe competition includes Top Fuel Bikes\, SuperTwin Bikes\, Pro Stock Bikes and Super Street Bikes. Last time out at Santa Pod in May\, Sweden’s Top Fuel Bike champion Rikard Gustafsson twice exceeded 260mph to set a remarkable new European speed record. Similar exceptional performance figures were attained in Super Street Bike when Britain’s race-winner Alan Morrison Jr. topped 230mph. \nAlongside the championships\, track action includes three spectacular Jet Cars and Graham Sykes’ extraordinary steam-powered ‘rocket’ bike\, Force of Nature (yes\, powered by steam – boiling water!) which has already clocked sub-7-second\, 150mph quarter-mile passes. Away from the track\, Santa Pod’s regular programme of family attractions includes Monster Trucks\, stunt shows\, children’s entertainments\, funfair rides and live music.\n\nThe European Finals takes place at Santa Pod Raceway\, near Wellingborough NN29 7XA\, from Thursday 7th to Sunday 10th September 2023. Full information can be found at https://santapod.co.uk/european-finals.php and tickets may be booked online at https://santapodtickets.com/ or by telephoning the box office at 01234 782828.

SUMMARY:Engineered in Bourne 2023
DESCRIPTION:Over the past few months we have been collaborating with Silverstone Museum\, BRM and the B.R.M Association on an exciting project to raise public awareness of Bourne’s proud motorsport heritage and importantly to inspire the next generation of engineers. \n \n\nThis project was energised In June last year\, when the BRM Association marked the 60th Anniversary of BRM winning both the Formula 1 constructors championship and Graham Hill becoming 1972 World Champion with a memorable day at the Corn Exchange featuring a display of many historic BRM’s and period films. \n  \n\n\n \n BMRC were kindly allowed to have presence on the day and were overwhelmed with the public’s response\, indeed some of you signed up to become members. \nIt was evident from the feedback that many had no knowledge of the history of the towns motorsport heritage\, yet there was an avid interest in motorsport especially within the younger age group. \nFor more information\, please contact Engineered in Bourne@bournemotorracingclub.co.uk

SUMMARY:World's Fastest Jensen
DESCRIPTION:Building a Bonneville race car is easy\, you take some old car you’ve been using as a daily runner\, beef up the engine and drivetrain\, chuck in a rollcage and you’re done!\n\n This is basically what Ian Northeast and a small group of friends did in 2018.\n We shipped our 1965 Jensen C-V8 out to America\, with high hopes\, loads of enthusiasm and no idea what we were in for.\n\n We went just fast enough to know we could go a lot faster.\n After many trials and tribulations we got back to Bonneville this August to a weather affected but ultimately successful speed week.

SUMMARY:Shed Racing
DESCRIPTION:Ivan’s career in the motor trade began when\, upon finishing his apprenticeship in pattern making\, he joined the workshop of the Chequered Flag\, quickly becoming foreman and experiencing the sights and sounds of the golden age in British motorsport. \nDuring 1963 he started his own business and competed in his first motor race in Mk1 Jaguar. This interest in motorsport led to Ivan becoming the British Production Saloon Car Champion in 1973\, but the oil crisis of the late seventies ended his professional racing career. The enthusiasm of the Bugatti marque nurtured by his father whose stories of Brooklands between the wars led to the formation of the restoration company in 1979.Ivan’s career in racing Bugatti’s began in 1983 in a Type 51\, followed by years of racing a succession of Type 35B models. He now owns a Type 51\, which he runs in significant historic racing events. With the arrival of the new millenium and Ivan’s sixtieth birthday\, he felt it was time to retire and pass the reins to his son\, Timothy. \nIf you were unable to attend\, or want to see Ivan’s talk again\, it is now on Youtube Ivan Dutton at BMRC

The opening and closing FIA European Championship rounds headline a drag racing programme which includes national championship rounds and historic events.

SUMMARY:ROBS LAMPLOUGH AVIATOR & RACING DRIVER
DESCRIPTION:A life fuelled by Aviation and Motor Sport \nOur speaker this month is former Aviator and racing driver Robs Lamplough. \nThe combined skills of Pilot and Racing Driver have over decades featured in the top level of Motorsport\, however Robs became a pioneer in the international search and restoration of both historic racing cars and airworthy military aircraft. \nA host of significant historic aeroplanes and racing cars owe their survival to him\, at a time when only a few skilled experts existed prior to the many today. \nHis passion for aviation and motorsport were clearly inherited from his Grandfather who was a physicist at the Royal Aircraft Establishment at Farnborough during both world wars. His father a WW11 Squadron Leader serving in Africa. \nUnsurprisingly he joined the RAF and learnt to fly in a Provost at Cranwell. Tragically his father was killed in a flying accident during his course and he left the service. \nIn 1962 Robs bought a Mini Cooper modified by renown tuner Don Moore\, entered into a number of races competing against a well known member of BMRC\, whose identity will be revealed at the meeting! \nHe quickly developed to become a professional international racing driver. Within just two years his first pro race was at the 1964 Canadian Grand Prix at Mosport Park\, in a Brabham BT8\, shown here at Laguna later that year.\n \nIn the following years he competed in an incredible long list of single seaters and sports cars\, both in period and historic cars.\nA common addiction is his enthusiasm for BRM’s\, he still owns a P25 and P48 shown here competing in France at Angouléme .\n \nRobs will also reveal his memorable meeting with Louis Stanley in Bourne to acquire three former team cars. This proved to be a catalyst for owning\, competing and dealing in historic racecars. Many can be viewed in a rolling presentation on the night prior to Robs’ talk. \nAmongst them is the ex Jim Clark Lotus 33 which took him to his second World Championship in 1965.\n \nA former North American Racing Team (NART) Ferrari 275LM found languishing in Ecuador fitted with a NSU Wankel Engine! Eventually its original engine was located as part of a total renovation and sold by the new owner for a world record sum.\n \nRobs rekindled his passion for aviation\, when together with his brother in law he purchased an ex RAF WW11 Harvard advanced trainer. \nIn the mid 1970’s following a tip off from a friend he travelled to Israel in search of two abandoned WW11 Hawker Hurricanes in a scrap yard in Tel Aviv. The dealer was located in a street translated from Hebrew as “The street of a thousand bent car dealers” Sure enough there they were\, purchased and bought back to Duxford for restoration. \nEventually the search widened and Spitfires and P51 Mustang’s found derelict in a Kibbutz\, given as a gift for the children to play in! They were acquired together with a host of spares and form the basis for many Warbirds now flying today. \nHis prowess as a pilot featured not only in air shows but were in demand in the film industry\, he flew his aircraft in Memphis Belle\, Pearl Harbour and Dark Blue World. Robs has so many stories to tell it at has been an impossible task selecting those to focus on for the evening but I am certain it will be a highly entertaining and informative evening\, not to be missed!!
